Myth: The Cheapest Policy Online Is the Best Deal

January 2026 · 4 min read · Sandeep Singh, POSP Advisor

Online insurance aggregators like PolicyBazaar and InsuranceDekho have made it easy to compare motor insurance premiums. Type in your car details, get 10 quotes in 30 seconds, pick the cheapest one. Simple. Logical. And for luxury vehicle owners — often the wrong approach.

How Aggregators Rank Results

Aggregator platforms are primarily optimised for conversion — getting you to buy quickly. The default sorting is almost always by premium, lowest first. The assumption embedded in this design is that lower premium means better deal.

For luxury vehicles with high repair costs, complex parts, and European service requirements, this assumption breaks down quickly.

What Premium Comparison Misses

"I bought the cheapest policy online for my Porsche Cayenne. When I needed a repair, the cashless network didn't include any Porsche authorised centres. I paid upfront and waited 6 weeks for reimbursement." — Cayenne owner, Gurugram

The Hidden Cost of the Cheapest Policy

A policy ₹15,000 cheaper than the next option might exclude tyre coverage. A single run-flat tyre on a BMW 7 Series costs ₹22,000–₹28,000. Two damaged tyres — common in a single accident — means ₹44,000–₹56,000 out of pocket that your "savings" don't come close to covering.

A policy with a lower IDV saves ₹8,000 in premium. If your car is totalled, the IDV gap might be ₹15–25 lakhs. The maths doesn't work in your favour.

What Good Comparison Actually Looks Like

Comparing insurance for a luxury vehicle isn't about finding the lowest number. It's about finding the best coverage at the most competitive price — and those are different things.

What a proper comparison checks
  • Identical coverage scope across all options — not just headline premium
  • Zero Dep scope verified against your car's specific parts costs
  • Cashless garage confirmation for your specific service centre
  • IDV verified against current market value
  • Claim settlement ratio checked for luxury vehicle category
  • Total cost of ownership — premium plus expected out-of-pocket at claims

When Online Aggregators Are Useful

Aggregators are genuinely useful for one thing — getting a quick sense of the premium range for your vehicle. If every insurer is quoting between ₹80,000 and ₹1,20,000, and one quote comes in at ₹55,000, that's a signal to look carefully at what's excluded.

Use aggregators as a starting point — not an ending point. The real comparison happens in the policy document, not the premium summary.
