Myth: Comprehensive Insurance Covers Everything

March 2026 · 4 min read · Sandeep Singh, POSP Advisor

The word "comprehensive" is one of the most misleading terms in the Indian motor insurance industry. Most luxury vehicle owners assume it means complete, all-encompassing protection. It does not — and the gap between assumption and reality is where most claim rejections happen.

What Comprehensive Insurance Actually Covers

Comprehensive motor insurance in India covers two broad categories:

That sounds thorough. But the exclusions are where the real picture emerges.

What Comprehensive Insurance Does NOT Cover

"My Mercedes GLC had an electrical failure. Not from an accident — just a fault. My comprehensive policy rejected the claim entirely. I paid ₹2.4 lakhs out of pocket." — Mercedes owner, South Delhi

The Add-Ons That Fill the Gaps

The Indian insurance market has evolved to fill these gaps through add-ons — but each costs extra and must be explicitly purchased. For luxury vehicles, the most important ones are:

Essential add-ons for luxury vehicles
  • Zero Depreciation — removes depreciation from parts claims
  • Engine Protection — covers consequential engine damage from flooding or hydrostatic lock
  • Return to Invoice — pays full invoice price if car is totalled or stolen, not just IDV
  • Roadside Assistance — 24hr breakdown support across India
  • Consumables Cover — covers oils, coolants and small parts during repair
  • Tyre Protection — covers accidental tyre damage outside of accidents

Why This Matters More for Luxury Vehicles

The repair costs for a BMW, Mercedes or Audi are 3–5x higher than for a standard car. An electrical fault that costs ₹30,000 to fix on a Maruti costs ₹1.5–2.5 lakhs on a German luxury car. The gap between what you assume is covered and what actually is covered translates directly into larger out-of-pocket expenses.

Engine protection is particularly critical for luxury SUVs in Delhi NCR — the city's waterlogging during monsoon season is a real risk, and hydrostatic lock on a BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE can cost ₹8–15 lakhs to repair. Without engine protection, your comprehensive policy will reject that claim.

The Right Question to Ask

Instead of asking "is my car comprehensively insured?", ask: "what specific scenarios will my insurer pay for, and what will I pay out of pocket?" The answer determines whether your policy is genuinely adequate for a luxury vehicle in India.
