Why Your Dealer's Insurance Quote Is Always Higher

February 2026 · 4 min read · Sandeep Singh, POSP Advisor

When you buy or renew a BMW, Mercedes or Audi, the dealership will almost always offer to handle your insurance. It's convenient. It feels like a natural part of the transaction. And it costs you ₹20,000–₹50,000 more than it should.

How Dealer Insurance Pricing Works

Dealerships are not insurance companies — they are intermediaries. When they sell you an insurance policy, they earn a commission from the insurer. This commission is built into the premium you pay.

In India's motor insurance market, dealer commissions on luxury vehicle policies typically range from 15% to 25% of the premium. On a ₹1.5 lakh policy, that's ₹22,500–₹37,500 going to the dealership — not to your coverage.

"BMW Gurugram quoted ₹1,82,000 for my 5 Series renewal. We found the identical policy from ICICI Lombard for ₹1,31,000 through independent comparison. Same coverage, same insurer — ₹51,000 difference." — Vaultee client, DLF Phase 4

Why the Same Insurer Charges Different Prices

This surprises most people. You can get a quote from HDFC ERGO through a BMW dealership, and a quote from HDFC ERGO through an independent advisor — and pay significantly different premiums for the exact same policy.

Insurers have different rate structures for different distribution channels. Dealerships often get locked into channel-specific pricing that includes their margin. Independent POSP advisors working on lower margins can access better rate tiers from the same insurer.

The Convenience Premium is Real — But Optional

Dealerships offer genuine convenience. One-stop service, no need to handle paperwork, immediate coverage. If your time is worth more than ₹30,000–₹50,000, it might make sense.

But for most luxury vehicle owners, a proper independent comparison takes less than 2 hours — and the saving is significant enough to justify it every single renewal.

What independent comparison looks like
  • Same car, same coverage compared across 5+ insurers simultaneously
  • Identical add-ons (Zero Dep, engine protection, RSA) compared like-for-like
  • Cashless garage list verified for your specific service centre
  • Claim settlement track record checked for each insurer
  • Total recommendation sent to WhatsApp within 2 hours

When to Use Dealer Insurance

There are scenarios where dealer insurance makes sense — primarily on the day of vehicle delivery, when you need immediate coverage and don't have time to compare. Even then, you can switch at renewal.

For renewals — where you have 30–60 days of planning time — there is no good reason to pay the dealer margin. The coverage is identical. The insurer is often the same. The only difference is the price.
