IDV — Insured Declared Value — is the single most important number in your motor insurance policy. It determines the maximum amount your insurer will pay if your car is stolen or declared a total loss. And most luxury vehicle owners have never checked if theirs is accurate.
IDV is calculated as the manufacturer's listed selling price minus depreciation based on the vehicle's age. IRDAI provides a standard depreciation schedule:
The problem: insurers use the ex-showroom price as the base, not the on-road price you actually paid. Registration charges, road tax, insurance and accessories are excluded from IDV by default.
Consider a Mercedes GLE 450 purchased in 2022 for ₹95 lakhs on-road. After 3 years, the standard IDV calculation might value it at ₹51–54 lakhs — representing a 40% depreciation. But the actual market value for a well-maintained GLE 450 in Delhi is ₹68–72 lakhs.
If your car is stolen or totalled, you receive ₹51 lakhs from the insurer. You need ₹70 lakhs to buy an equivalent replacement. The gap — ₹19 lakhs — comes out of your own pocket.
"My Audi Q7 was totalled in an accident. The IDV was ₹48L. The actual replacement cost was ₹67L. Nobody had ever told me about the IDV gap." — Q7 owner, Noida
Return to Invoice (RTI) is an add-on that addresses this gap. Instead of paying the depreciated IDV, it pays the original invoice price of the vehicle — or sometimes the current replacement cost — in the event of total loss or theft.
For luxury vehicles where depreciation creates large gaps, RTI is one of the most valuable add-ons available. The additional premium is typically ₹8,000–₹18,000 — a fraction of the potential gap.
We check IDV accuracy for every policy we review. If we find a significant gap between IDV and market value, we recommend either a higher IDV declaration or the RTI add-on — and show you the cost difference in your comparison.
Send us your current policy on WhatsApp. We'll check the IDV, compare it against market value, and tell you if you're under-insured before your next renewal.
